Saucers Over Appalachia!

I'm excited to announce I've been accepted as a vendor for Saucers Over Appalachia, on June 14th!
I'll be bringing many UFO and other paranormal documentaries to beef up your collection as well as the usual horror selection and art. Check out the website for more details on the event and follow my Instagram for a preview of some of the things I'll be bringing in the coming weeks.

The Appalachian region has an extended history of UFO/Paranormal sightings and encounters. If you hold even a passive interest in the paranormal you should plan on attending Saturday June 14th as the community gathers to celebrate the history of these events and learn more. There will be lots of speakers, events, food, and of course art and collectibles for sale. Hope to see you there!

More mystery tape and web updates

Work has been slammed lately. On top of my other commitments I haven't had much time to sit down and go through more of the mystery tapes from the estate sale until now.

The next tape was simply labeled "space" and is a good hour of shooting some model planets over a backdrop of stars. Some great miniature work that comes out well on the VHS format. Near the end the creator actually moves his hand into the shot to give some scale to the miniature planets and shows us that they've been suspended to the backdrop giving a little illusion of depth.

The next tape labeled "Skeleton Rider" shows us another puppet they were working on. So far I'm about a half hour in and it's just footage of this skeleton figuring swaying on this galloping furry creature. I'll revisit this one later to see if there's any other footage of note.

Finally, maybe the most noteworthy update, is we have the artist's name. This tape was labeled "The Art of Tim Smith." It starts as a bit of a room tour, silently moving around the space showing some of the puppets and sculptures we've seen previously before taking some extended shots of his various paintings. I enjoy his line work and subject matter, obviously a fan of fantasy and science fiction. It's nice to have a name now, though I'm not having much luck at all in finding out more about them on the web or social media. As you can imagine the name "Tim Smith" leads to a lot of dead ends.

I'll continue to watch the tapes for more content and clues. We may not ever know who this person was, but the content along the way is certainly interesting.

*Page updates
I've added a knowledge library section to the site that will contain information on VHS care and maintenance, collecting, as well as creating your own tapes. I'm still working on building the pages within so it's an empty library at this point but stay tuned. I also found some of my files from my original Geocities Sonic fan page so I'm toying with uploading those in there as well.
Also cleaned up some links here and there and general tidying up. As always, thanks for stopping by!

Mystery Tapes

My friends went to an estate sale and happened upon a nice stack of mystery tapes to go through. By their description of the room they were found in, whoever the owner was seemed to be an artist and held an interest in the macabre.

I love going through old tapes and documenting the finds, especially when it's actual video camera footage. I'll post updates as I view these. Judging from what I've seen so far I'm hoping they've stumbled upon a treasure trove!

The first tape seems to be sort of test footage. They made a logo reading "Talent Cave" and spend several minutes testing different lighting as well as the video effects included in their particular camera, such as mirror imaging and inverting colors. Some searches online haven't really yielded anything about what Talent Cave might have been, so it's hard to say if this was ever shown to anyone at this point.

After that we jump to a lengthy shot of a miniature castle and town set up in someone's back yard. The only audio is the occasional breathing of the camera operator as well as the chirping of crickets. Again they seem to be toying around with lighting options and camera effects. We do see as they're thumbing through the camera options a time stamp of 3/13/1999 pops up. So if that's accurate we have a time period at least.

Next we have some test footage of a sort of Xenomorph looking plant monster and a Dragon. It seems the artist had an interest in puppetry! The mouths of both creatures move and the Dragon seems to have full movement in it's head and arms as well.

Finally we have a message from the dark lord

The message being, check out my cool skull lamp!

These tapes have been a fun ride so far. I'll post more interesting things as I come across them.

Raddest guest book

It's cold! We haven't had single digit weather around here in some time. As a result I haven't had much motivation for my art projects as of late, but some are trickling through here and there.
I put a page out at the Boo-tique to act as a guestbook for anyone that's visited my booth and I'm delighted to see it's looking like a 90's graffiti covered school desk!

Regarding the Boo-tique, I get emails here and there asking for certain projects to be created on VHS for the store. I can only produce and sell titles that have moved to the public domain. I can certainly assist in creating cases and VHS shells, but for copyrighted titles you'll need to do your own recording. If it's a title that you own I can certainly help answer questions about making VHS recordings but I'm afraid I must exclude myself from producing those for you. The titles you see on this site are from my personal collection and for my own personal use.

On that note, the *page updates* for today include some more tapes I've created in the video section I hope you'll enjoy!
Added some additional links to the links page and general clean up.

Life and webpage updates

For the most part 2024 itself was a pretty rad year. I started selling my art at an oddities shop in town and have made an amazing group of like minded weirdo friends along the way! If you're ever traveling the eastern TN Southwest VA area stop by and check em out, or online here: https://bristolbootique.com/

Earlier in the year we got a dog! The kids named her Rocket (she's fast af). She's super smart, loves adventure, and bodies of water! I'll probably be mentioning her quite a bit.

Pigeon Forge 2018 (Pick Ups and Arcade Review)

As a last hurrah for summertime, we decided to take a small weekend trip to Pigeon Forge TN to do some sight seeing, swimming, and of course shopping.

On Saturday afternoon we made our way to Control Freak Video Games to peruse some retro games. I actually hadn't planned on buying anything, figuring that prices would be way out of hand being in a tourist town and all but I was pleasantly surprised. They definitely knew what they had and what their product was worth but weren't charging an arm and a leg by any means. The selection was nice, with just about any common game you were looking for readily available and of course the rarer pieces behind the glass to draw your attention. I especially liked their case of rarer import consoles, which were of course for sale but not in my price range for what I had budgeted on this trip.

While they didn't have any games I didn't already have in my collection on the racks, I did find some neat souvenirs to bring home.

Poster Prints: R-Type and Chrono Trigger

Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf. This was a dollar complete and I didn't have it so I couldn't exactly pass it up but my main intention was to confuse my brother. Like "we're having a game night tonight and you're picking golf?" I also wanted to try out a Fantasy Zone related trick I heard about recently.

If you're curious, on the first hole try to take over 100 strokes before reaching the putting green for a surprise. It's a neat easter egg and also the game's way of telling you that maybe Golf isn't exactly your game.

Just click here to save yourself a ton of time.

I also snagged these Sonic and Tails decals. Not exactly sure what I'll stick them on yet. I'm bad about stickers this way. What if I don't like where I put them? They'll probably just end up in my folder with all the other sticker sheets I've found over the years. Anyone else have this problem?

Before grabbing dinner for the evening the kids were itching to get some go kart racing and arcade play in. This brought us to the Rockin' Raceway.

Now I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a go kart racing expert by any means. I can say that the karts handled well and I was able to go fast so that got an A plus in my book.\

The arcade on the other hand, well it's not exactly something that would please an enthusiast looking for the classics. Their main focus seemed to be aimed at ticket redemption, so we loaded up the kids with tokens and sent them on their quest for spider rings and candy that could be obtained much cheaper at a gas station.

That's not to say there weren't a few things here and there for the 30 somethings though. They had a nice Sega Super GT setup that felt like it was well maintained. They also had a couple of Sega 18 Wheeler Pro Trucker cabinets, though I never was much of a fan of these.

As we made our rounds looking for something engaging to play, out of the corner of my eye I caught sight of the Street Fighter 3 Third Strike character select screen, a personal favorite. The excitement grew fast but crashed and burned when I saw that it was actually one of those multicade machines that 9 times out of 10 look like they're built from leftover particle board. My heart sank even more when I saw the joystick layout.

This has got to be, hands down, the worst button layout I've ever seen.

So unless you have Hulk sized hands, rest assured there's no way to effectively play 90 percent of the games on this cabinet. But I thought, what the heck, let's give it a shot for laughs since it was only a single token to play. That's a token I'll never get back. Not only did my muscle memory have me pushing the blank spaces between buttons, but the controls had been setup backwards-kicks on top and punches on the bottom. 3rd Strike wasn't the only game that suffered; my brother took a shot at Capcom's Alien vs Predator and had similar difficulties.

So the Rockin' Arcade ended up being a bust for the adults but at least the kids had a good time. I obviously can't recommend it for anyone looking for the traditional arcade experience but I suppose it makes for a good enough break between go kart races. One bit of silver lining is that they still use their own unique tokens for the games, so I took one home to add to my token collection.

Overall it was a great weekend and it was refreshing to do one last mini vacation before going back to the day to day of work and school. There's plenty to in Pigeon Forge no matter what you're interested in and I'm sure I'll be back in the future.

Hello and Welcome!

Hello and thanks for stopping by! If you've never stumbled upon my blog before, this is pretty much my personal space for sharing my thoughts on old video games, comics, movies and other stuff I was into in the 80's and 90's.

Don't expect anything ground breaking from this post, I'm mostly just kicking the dust off and other tidying up of links and other pages. I've been thinking of getting back into blogging again and I was struggling with whether or not I should create a new one or pick this one back up. Strangely enough it looks like my old reviews still get a number of hits here and there despite my inactivity. So since I have a bit of content built here I decided to just pick things back up.

In the coming days I'll be posting some new reviews I've been working on. Maybe a bit of my junk finds and history as well. If you decide to stay and have a look around I apologize in advance if you see anything moving around or disappearing while I make sure everything is in working order.

Again thank you stopping by and I hope you'll come again soon!
